PROFILE

Hiroko Hirayama joined Asamura Patent Office, p.c. in July 2013 after serving as an examiner and appeal examiner at the Japan Patent Office and as the Director of its Machinery Examination Division. Making full use of the experience she gained while working at the Japan Patent Office, at Asamura Patent Office she is mainly involved in work related to foreign and domestic trademarks.

As an examiner and appeal examiner at the Japan Patent Office, she worked in a number of different examination offices as well as the International Trademark Registration Application Examination Office, where she conducted patent application examinations under the Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol.

In addition, Ms. Hirayama has also served as Director of the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Patent Office, Director of the Trademark International Classification Division, and Director of the Trademark Examination Standards Division. As Director of the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Patent Office, her main responsibilities involved starting up the Hokkaido Regional Intellectual Property Strategy Department, providing advice concerning the trademarks of regional organizations, and the creation of a booklet for the development and promotion of regional brands.

As Director of the Trademark International Classification Division, Ms. Hirayama attended international conferences over a period of three years concerning the revision of the trademark international classification under the Nice Agreement, and participated in discussions regarding the 10th revision of the classification.

As Director of the Trademark Examination Standard Division, she was involved in the revision of standards pertaining to closely-related products and examination standards (10th revision) and examination standards based on the relevant legal revision of 2011.

Immediately prior to joining Asamura Patent Office, as Director of the Machinery Examination Division, she guided and managed examiners, making examinations more efficient and improving their overall quality.

In addition, Ms. Hirayama is expanding her expertise in international fields by participating in conferences around Asia as well as the Trademark Trilateral Cooperation Meeting, formed by Japan (Japan Patent Office), the US (USPTO), and Europe (OHIM) to coordinate trademark system operations.

Before that, worked as an examiner in the Examinations Department of the Patent Office, a judge in the Judgment Office,
head of the Patent Office of the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, head of the Trademark International Classifications Management Office, head of the Trademark Examination Standards Office, and head of the Machinery Examinations of the Examinations Office.

Using my experiences in the Patent Office, I feel I can be a bridge between the Patent Office (judges) and the need to utilize intellectual property systems.
I believe that my knowledge of international fields allows me to contribute to my work as a patent attorney.
